let's notice something, the line on the left is whatever is x < -2, so is a line with a negative slope, so is -x something, now, let's notice, when x = -3 the line is at y = 4, now if we check say -x-1 and plug those values -(-3) -1 = y, or +3 - 1 = y, but 2 ≠ 4!! so that won't work, so it's not that one.

now, let's check the other one with negative slope, hmm -x+1, so x = -3 and y = 4, so -(-3) + 1 = y, or +3+1 = 4!! ahha!

well, now let's notice the parabola in the picture, is really shifted downwards by 2 units, or namely x² - 2 and so on.
