The denominator cannot be zero. That is, all of what is on the bottom of the expression cannot be zero.

We find out what makes it zero, and we exclude it.

0 = (x+2)(x+4)

separate into two equations (according to the ZeroProduct Property)

0=x+2 and 0=x+4

subtract 2 on both sides on the first equation.

-2 = x

x = -2

Then subtract 4 from both sides of the 2nd equation.

-4 = x

x = -4

These values of x make the denominator zero, so they must be excluded.

x cannot be -2 and

x cannot be -4
