Take -4x + y = 1 and multiply it all through by -4

16x - 4y = -4 Add this to the second equation

-16x + 5y = 8

y = 4

Substitute 4 for y in either of the two original equations.

-4x + y = 1

-4x + 4 = 1 Subtract 4 from both sides

-4x + 4 - 4 = 1 - 4

-4x = -3 Divide both sides by -4
