d. with immediate outrage

In May 1970, a revived anti-war movement staged huge rallies across the country. 4 college students on the mostly working-class campus of Kent State (Ohio) University were killed by National Guardsmen, and 2 others were gunned down by police at Jackson State, a historically Black college in Mississippi. The killings at Kent State and Jackson State prompted more demonstrations and further tarnished the image of the war. Not everyone sympathized with the slain college students or their cause, however. Construction workers in New York City rioted in the streets, beat anti-war demonstrators, and raised a US flag that had been lowered to honor the Kent State victims. On May 20, the Building and Construction Trades Council of Greater New York organized a hard hat rally, which drew 100,000 blue-collar workers to a demonstration of support for Nixon and the war.
