The Freedmen's Bureau was established by the United States government in 1865 to assist newly freed slaves and poor whites in the South following the Civil War. However, the Bureau faced numerous challenges including limited resources, resistance from white Southerners, political opposition, limited authority, racial violence, and economic challenges. Despite some successes, the Bureau struggled to fully address the needs of the newly freed slaves in the South.
