Point 1: We are able to speak with people online from the comfort of our home
Positive: We are easily able to communicate with people, and this allows us to have an open mind with new ideas and experiences. An example being how many people aren’t as xenophobic towards each other than we were years ago, since we can speak and learn about each other from our own homes.
Negative: This access to online communication, however, could be a negative thing because people use the internet as a replacement for real life human interaction. This isn’t healthy. An example being how people spend most of their time online, and not being able to form good relationships with people.
Point 2: The internet has allowed people to form and be a part of a community
Positive: There’s a community for everything, and there’s people who have the same interests and ideas as you online. This a good thing for society because it allows you to make friends, and share ideas and post from said community. An example being an online gaming community, where people who share the love of a certain videogame can talk about it and play together.
Negative: Some hobbies and ideas are unhealthy, and being a part of a community that endorses it further can lead to group polarization. This is when the dominant point of view in a group often tends to become strengthened to a more extreme position after group discussion. An example of this would be if a slightly racist person joined a community with like minded people, this person would become even more racist. This is a phenomenon that has been proven in psychology studies, and is a negative for society.
