b. Boston, Massachusetts

Some of the most notorious protests took place in the predominantly Irish area of South Boston, Massachusetts, whose schools were being merged with those of the mostly Black neighborhood of Roxbury. In 1974, white parents organized as a group called Restore Our Alienated Rights (ROAR) and refused to cooperate with the court order. White students threw rocks at buses carrying Blacks and chanted racist slogans. Black students retaliated with violence of their own. Despite the intense opposition, the courts would continue to oversee the desegregation of Boston’s public schools for the next 15 years.
