c. Ayn Rand

As racial conservatives mobilized against the freedom movement, other conservatives began the long-term project of updating their ideology and building movements of their own. They set up conservative think tanks (institutes) to undertake research and engage in political advocacy, including two that championed a new concept of free enterprise. Libertarians such as Ayn Rand grew immensely popular, as did a number of new conservative religious organizations. Some were merely anti-communist. But others were also committed to overturning Eisenhower's modern Republicanism and rolling back the New Deal, on the grounds that government regulation of business--especially government protection of unions-impinged on human freedom.
