During the Cold War, the US government was worried about the threat of communism at home. To fight this, they made a group called the House Un-American Activities Committee (HUAC) in 1938. HUAC looked into people who were suspected of being disloyal or having communist connections. They investigated people in Hollywood, and this made it hard for some of them to work. The government also made federal workers take oaths of loyalty, tried to remove suspected communists from government jobs, and passed a law in 1950 that made communist groups register with the government. Some people thought these actions were unfair and went against people's rights, but the government believed they were necessary to protect the country.
