Anthropologists conventionally distinguish three types of societies in terms of degree to which different social groups have unequal access to advantages: egalitarian, rank, and class societies. In egalitarian societies, there is little to no difference in access to resources and power among individuals. In rank societies, there is a hierarchy of prestige and status, but access to resources is relatively equal. In class societies, there are significant differences in access to resources and power among individuals based on their social class.
