Characteristic of Northern and Southern states
The Northern states had more factories and businesses that made things. They built businesses like making clothes, building stuff, and creating things. The growth of factories and business buildings made more people move to cities. Cities built more roads, bridges, and other things.
The Southern states depended a lot on farming, especially growing crops like cotton, tobacco, and rice. This farming economy was supported by slave labor because the plantation system needed many people to grow and collect crops.
The northern states mostly trusted the federal government and thought it should have more power and control. They thought the government could help make the economy better, build roads and buildings, and improve people's lives.
The states in the South believed that state governments should have more power and supported the rights of states. They wanted the power to be spread out more, with each state having more freedom to make their own rules and decisions.
