In the Indonesian province of Tana Toraja, people follow a unique funeral ritual called Ma'nene. Every three years, families exhume the corpses of their deceased relatives from their graves and dress them up in new clothes. The bodies are then paraded around the village in a procession, before being returned to their tombs.The origin of this custom dates back to several centuries ago when the Torajan people believed that death was not an abrupt end but rather a gradual process towards the afterlife. They believed that the soul remained with the body even after death and that it needed to be cared for as if it were still alive. Hence, they began exhuming the remains of their loved ones, cleaning and dressing them in fresh clothes, feeding them, and making offerings to them.Although Ma'nene is considered bizarre by outsiders, it is an essential part of Torajan culture and serves as a way for families to honor their ancestors and maintain a connection with them beyond death.
