Answer: 1513

Explanation: Spanish possessions extended over many parts of what is today the United States from 1513 when Juan Ponce de León first arrived in Florida and claimed the territory for the King of Spain, until 1821 when news of Mexico's independence from Spain reached Santa Fe.

Spain established a colony in North America with the founding of St.
Augustine, Florida, in 1565. St.
Augustine was the first permanent European settlement in what is now the continental United States. It was founded by the Spanish explorer Pedro Menéndez de Avilés, who sailed from Spain with a fleet of ships to establish a new colony in La Florida. The Spanish claimed much of what is now the southeastern United States as part of their empire, and St. Augustine became the capital of Spanish Florida.
The colony endured attacks from rival
European powers and indigenous peoples, but it remained under Spanish control until 1821, when Florida was ceded to the United States.
