Explanation: Figurative language is the use of non-literal phrases or words to create further meaning in writing or speech. Figures of speech, such as similes and metaphors, are an example of this. Other devices, such as alliteration, can also be used to communicate an image, meaning or idea. The most important figurative motif in the poem is the mamool cookies. They serve as a metaphor for the text - which is a metaphor anyway - for shared human experiences. There is a spiritual dimension to the biscuits - 'It was like a sacrament...' a shared religious experience, albeit a Christian one. The plant too: 'Always stay rooted to somewhere" with the pun on roots, both as appendages of a plant but also another expression of shared human experiences. The final line sums up the significance of the piece:'Not everyhting is lost' - i.e. people from different cultures and different faiths can come together and share common experiences.
