In a right triangle, a and b are the lengths of the legs and c is the length of the hypotenuse. If a=2 feet and b=1 foot, what is c?

Pythagoras we all know already latest since middle school (if not already from upper elementary school).

and you need help with that ?

always (ALWAYS !) remember Pythagoras :

a² + b² = c²

a, b are the legs, c is the Hypotenuse (the side opposite of the 90° angle).

so, in our case :

c² = 2² + 1² = 4 + 1 = 5

c = sqrt(5) ft = 2.236067977... ft

"sqrt" standing for "square root".
