All but a small portion of a piece of pie is eaten. We divide that portion up into 4 equal pieces.

a) Let x be the portion of the original whole that one of the pieces represents. Then we know that:

3x = 1/8

Multiplying both sides by 4, we get:

12x = 1/2

Dividing both sides by 12, we get:

x = 1/24

Therefore, one of the pieces represents 1/24 of the original whole.

b) Since 3 out of 4 pieces amount to 1/8 of the original whole, we know that the remaining 1/4 must be equal to 7/8 of the original whole. Therefore, the small remaining part represents:

1/4 * 1/8 = 1/32

So the small remaining part represents 1/32 of the original whole.
