All but a small portion of a piece of pie is eaten. We divide that portion up into 4 equal pieces.

a) If 3 of the 4 pieces together amount to 1 over 8 of the original whole, then what portion of the

original whole would one of the pieces represent.

b) What portion of the original whole did the small remaining part represent?

a) Let x be the portion of the original whole that one of the pieces represents. Then we know that:

3x = 1/8

Multiplying both sides by 4, we get:

12x = 1/2

Dividing both sides by 12, we get:

x = 1/24

Therefore, one of the pieces represents 1/24 of the original whole.

b) Since 3 out of 4 pieces amount to 1/8 of the original whole, we know that the remaining 1/4 must be equal to 7/8 of the original whole. Therefore, the small remaining part represents:

1/4 * 1/8 = 1/32

So the small remaining part represents 1/32 of the original whole.
