Why is it important to use the strategy of lateral reading?

It makes it possible to find additional sources when writing a report.
It makes it possible to compare ideas with those of other people.
It makes it possible to quickly determine if a source is on the right topic.
It makes it possible to evaluate an unfamiliar source for accuracy and bias.

Lateral reading is basically searching for information about a source while you are reading it; you are checking for currency, relevancy, authority, accuracy, and purpose (CRAAP method) by reading what other sites say about your source.
