This depends on your definition of close.

Rational numbers are numbers that can be written as p/q where p and q are integers and q is not 0. Examples include 22/7 or 1 or 0.5.

Irrational numbers are not rational. Example include pi or square root of 2.

Two rational numbers close to -8 could be -9 and -25/3. Two irrational numbers could be -e and
-5√(2).

Then the order goes -9,-25/3 (since it is -8.333...),
-5√(2) (root 2 is around 1.4 so it is near -7),-e(around -2.7)
