Mrs. Bell has 24 students. Mr. Dole has 36 students in his class. The two classes are

working on the same project and so the students in each class need to be split up into
equally sized groups. What is the maximum number of students that can be in each
group?

Answer:

12.

Explanation:

In this equation we need to find the greatest common factor between 24 and 36. First of all, we need to find some factors of these two.

24 has quite a lot of factors, but we can name them all.

1, 2, 3, 4, 6, 8, 12, and 24.

Now we look at the factors of 36 and look for the same numbers.

1, 2, 3, 4, 6, 9, 12, 18, and 36.

Here are the numbers that are the same.

1, 2, 3, 4, 6, 12.

Now that we have these numbers, we look for the greatest.

That would be 12. So the greatest number of students that can be in each group is 12.
