EQ: “How have I improved in each of the four areas of Essential Academic Skills for success?”

1. Accessing Prior Knowledge and Review 4_Ess_Skills_PPT (2).pdf

Identify the appropriate numbered Essential Academic Skills for each task on the slide.
Hint: The tasks are not listed in order.
How often do these skills happen in this order inside an academic setting?
2. Four Essential Skills for Academic Success*

You have already learned a “writing process” that is student-centered and personal in your high school English/Language Arts classes.
However, there are many academic writing processes, and you may differ in the way you:
Begin with a prompt or task assigned by an instructor (Essential Skill 1); or, in more advanced classes (upper-division/graduate), with research questions related to the class designed by the students.
Draw from, and take notes from, sources outside of the students themselves (Essential Skills 2 and 3). Source type depends upon the assignment, the instructor, and the content area. You may do library or internet research, or your sources may be people you survey, interview, or observe. In the sciences, evidence is provided by data collected during an experiment.
Require you to keep the prompt or task in mind and integrate your sources (Essential Skill 4) into your writing in an appropriate way for the classes you are taking.
3. Evaluation, Reflection, and Goal Setting essentialskillgoalreflection041 (1).pdf

Complete the Essential Skills: Evaluation, Reflection, and Goal Setting handout individually and be honest.
Identify four corners inside the classroom and label each with a different Essential Skill.
When you have finished your “self-reflection,”
identify the skill you feel most accomplished in and move to that corner.
Circle up to help create a respectful listening and sharing environment in each corner.
Next, share your successes in the skill you rated highest and your goal to help you continue to improve in the same area.
Once everyone has had a chance to share in their respective corner, move to the corner of the skill that you feel least accomplished in and have the most room for improvement and share your reflections and goals.
Once you have returned to your seats, share “What does proficiency with academic research look like?” with students and explain that in addition to the Four Essential Skills, students will be working on these skills to become proficient in research.

Answer:

Accessing Prior Knowledge and Review - Essential Academic Skill 1

Four Essential Skills for Academic Success - Essential Academic Skills 1, 2, 3, and 4

Evaluation, Reflection, and Goal Setting - Essential Academic Skills 1, 2, 3, and 4

What does proficiency with academic research look like? - Essential Academic Skills 1, 2, 3, and 4

The skills listed in these tasks do not necessarily occur in a specific order in an academic setting. Instead, they are often used in conjunction with each other throughout the process of completing an academic task or project.

For the exit ticket question, students can use the information uncovered through the processing activity to guide their upcoming research project by identifying which Essential Academic Skills they feel they need to work on and setting specific goals to improve in those areas. They can also use the information to help them understand what proficiency with academic research looks like and strive to reach that level of proficiency in their own work.
