One of the instances where Esperanza shows her empathy towards others is when she starts working with her mother in the fields, picking grapes. Esperanza is used to living a privileged life, and the physical labor in the fields is challenging for her. However, she does not complain and instead tries to work as hard as she can to help her mother. She also notices that some of the other workers are struggling, such as a woman who has a baby and cannot keep up with the work. Esperanza offers to help the woman by carrying her baby while she works.

Another instance where Esperanza shows her empathy is when she befriends a young girl named Marta. Marta is a striking worker who is fighting for better working conditions for the workers. At first, Esperanza is hesitant to befriend Marta because her family owns a farm and employs workers. However, Esperanza begins to understand the struggles of the striking workers and sympathizes with their cause. She helps Marta by bringing food and water to the striking workers and even joins them in their protest.
