Due now ty.. In paragraph 4 of the historical account (Passage 1), the author says that having a young teacher in the house "gave all the young misses a fair chance at a possible admirer."

1) Abigail stood at the window of the farmhouse and peered out at the snowy lane. She wanted to glimpse Mr. Jonathan Miller as he rode up on his horse. Mr. Miller was the town's new schoolteacher, and he would be staying with her family through the middle of the month. Abigail was thirteen years old, and Mr. Miller would be her fourth teacher. She had been in and out of school for several years. Though exceptionally bright, Abigail could not attend school consistently because her family needed her help on the farm. But this year would be different, as Papa promised that Abigail could focus on her lessons full time during the school year.

2) Would Mr. Miller consider her a serious student, though, or would he focus on teaching and training her little brothers and the other boys? Mr. Thompson said how pleased he was that Mr. Miller would be staying with the family for a few weeks, and Mr. Miller remarked that he was grateful as well. Abigail's brothers came in from stacking firewood and the group gathered in the living room by the bright, crackling fire. The boys were eager to ask Mr. Miller all the questions that their bright imaginations had dreamed up since the day in September when Mr. Thompson announced that a new teacher would arrive after the harvest. Now the children's questions tumbled over each other as they forgot their manners and ignored the rules of turn-taking.
