1. Grandma Betty made a quilt out of old shirts and pants. The quilt was a large square that was 36 1/2 inches long. What is the area of the quilt?

2. During an experiment, the scientists made a square hole in the table by mistake. The hole was 9.3 inches long. How big was the hole that the scientists made?

Area is calculated by multiplying length times width. since a square has the same length and width it's simply 36.5*36.5. The 2 at the end is much more important the more advanced you get in mathematics, but basically the quilt is two dimensional, therefor it needs the two at the end.(a line is one dimensional and therefore doesn't need anything at the end and a cube is tree dimensional, so it would need a 3 at the end). Therefore 36.5*36.5 = 1332.25 and to show its a two dimensional area you add in².

The second question is similar. Multiply the length(9.3) by the width(also 9.3) dor 86.49. As explained above a two dimensional hole needs the two at the end. This question offers the answer in in or cm, you need to stick with whatever unit the question asked, in this case in.
