you need to group like terms together and -12 and 43 are like terms ...when transposing (moving) -12 to the other side of the equal sign ,the minus sign on -12 changes to a plus , because the additive inverse is subtraction

so 5x - 12 = 43

5x - 12 + 12 = 43 + 12 (what you do on the left hand side you also do on the right hand side )

5x + 0 = 55

5x = 55

dive both sides by 5 so that you'll be left with x because the question wants x not 5x

5x ÷ 5 = 55 ÷ 5

x = 11
