Daniel Webster of Massachusetts was against the use of slavery but he agreed to compromise on the issue. Why?

He wanted to appeal to the pro-slavery majority of voters in Massachusetts.

He was willing to do almost anything to keep the United States together.

He wanted to run for president and needed southern support.

He was swayed by John C. Calhoun's sound arguments in favor of the use of slavery.

It’s He was swayed by John C. Calhoun’s sound arguments in favor of the use of slavery.

Webster spoke in favor of clay’s compromise proposals that a ban on slavery in the territory acquired from Mexico was not necessary. His support for the compromise doomed his chance for presidency. I had this question in 10th grade.
