The dodo (Raphus cucullatus) was a flightless bird endemic to the island of Mauritius in the Indian Ocean. Its closest genetic relative was the also extinct Rodrigues solitaire. The dodo's diet is thought to have included fruits, nuts, and seeds.
The dodo has been extinct since the mid-to-late 17th century. It is commonly used as an example of human-induced extinction.
