The Johnstown flood was caused by the collapse of the South Fork Dam in Pennsylvania on May 31, 1889.

About 2,200 people were killed because of the disaster. Homes and other structures were swept away. 33 train engines were pulled into the raging waters.

The American Red Cross provided its first major relief efforts in the after-effects of the Johnstown flood.
