Something that Lin-Manuel Miranda's brilliant musical doesn't make clear is that Hamilton published the Reynolds Pamphlet to defend himself against charges of financial corruption. The musical makes it seem that Hamilton published the pamphlet to preempt leaks about his affair with Maria Reynolds. But the Democratic-Republicans didn't care about Hamilton's sex life. They used Hamilton's payments to James Reynolds to accuse Hamilton of embezzling US Treasury funds. They knew that charge was false; Hamilton had earlier privately presented them with the evidence of his affair with Maria Reynolds. But they assumed that Hamilton would be reluctant to hurt his wife, and her very powerful family, by publicly admitting to the affair. Hamilton's publication of the Reynolds Pamphlet was his way of countering the corruption charge, which would have been a far greater blow to his reputation.
