A = s² ( s is the side length )

the diagonal divides the square into 2 right triangles

using Pythagoras' identity on the lower right triangle with hypotenuse 8 and sides s , then

s² + s² = 8²

2s² = 64 ( divide both sides by 2 )

s² = 32

Then

A = s² = 32 ft²
