x + y = 57 (obtained from the first line of the question)

x - y = 3 (obtained from the second line of the question)

Now we are going to use the rules of simultaneous equations to find x and y :

I will use elimination method :

Add the 2 equations to eliminate the y :

2x = 60

x = 30

Substitute x into equation 1 :

(30) + y = 57

Subtract 30 from both sides :

y = 57 - 30
