After a few mathletes join the team, the team is able to solve 40% more problems per session. Of the team can solve 42 problems per session now, how many problem were they able to solve before the new mathletes joined? (Please EXPLAIN how you got it ;)

Then we have:

  • x + 40% = 42
  • 1.4x = 42
