Answer: The answer is C, 4 7/12 pounds

Explanation:

To add fractions you need to turn the the mixed number into an improper fraction so

First turn 3 1/3 into an improper fraction by multiplying whole number (number beside the fraction) by the denominator (the number on the bottom) then add that by the numerator (the number on top)

3 x 3 = 9 + 1 = 10

You keep the denominator

so 3 1/3 is 10/3

Next we have to do the same thing 1 1/4

1 x 4 = 4 + 1 = 5/ 4

So now we have 10/3 and 5/4, we have to make it the same denominator in order to add them. We make the denominator the same for both fractions by finding the LCM, or the least common multiple.

The LCM of 3 and 4 is 12. So you multiply 10/3 by 4/4 to make the denominator the same

10 x 4 = 40 3 x 4 = 12

10/3 x 4/4 = 40/12 (to multiply fractions, multiply straight)

For 5/4 we multiply 3/3 because 4 times 3 = 12. We also multiply the top by 3 because it has to be the same.

5 x 3 = 15. 4 x 3 = 12

5/4 x 3/3 = 15/12

now we can add both of them because they have the same denominators

40/12 + 15/12 = 55/12

we keep the denominator and add the numerators together

Now we have to simplify 55/12, but we can't for this one because it's already in it's simplest form.

Now we turn 55/12 into a whole number, which is 4 7/12

Hope this helps!

Answer:

Explanation:

3 1/3 = 10 / 3

1 1/4 = 5 / 4

10/3 - 5/4

40 / 12 + 15 / 12

55 / 12

4 7 / 12
