4 4/9 you multiply the denominator, 9, by the whole number, 4. (36) Then you add the numerator, 4 to get 40. That’s how many 9ths you have. 40/9.

Because each one of the whole number = 9/9ths

So when we multiply as above, you are adding 9/9 + 9/9 + 9/9 + 9/9 + 4/9. Add the numerators, but the denominator stays the same.
