Read the following excerpt from the Monroe Doctrine. Then, in one or two sentences, describe the main idea presented in the excerpt.

[T]hat the American continents, by the free and independent condition . . . are henceforth not to be considered as subjects for future colonization by any European powers. . . . Our policy, in regard to Europe, . . . nevertheless remains the same, which is, not to interfere in the internal concerns of any of its powers; It is impossible that the allied powers [Europe] should extend their political system to any portion of either continent, without endangering our peace and happiness . . .

The main idea here is that the United States going forward from the Monroe Presidency, would no longer tolerate or allow European powers to colonize any independent countries in either North or South America which effectively put the two continents under American protection and influence.

The U.S. also promised in respect, to continue to remain neutral in European affairs.
