The boundaries of the nations of Africa as they are now is as a result of the European scramble for colonies on the continent. When these European powers held the Berlin Conference, they simply demarcated the continent amongst themselves by making claims based on maps.

These claims enabled them to draw up boundaries that were geometric with quite a number of straight lines which cared little for physical features or the tribes living in the area.

This is why countries like Egypt, Sudan, Botswana and Angola have straight lines in their boundaries as well as why tribes like the Tswana are in two different countries being South Africa and Botswana even thought they occupy the same area.
