Answer: 32 square millimeters

Step-by-step explanation

There are a few ways we could approach this. But I'll break the figure up into a triangle and parallelogram as the instructions mentioned.

The triangle has base 8 and height 3.

area = 0.5*base*height = 0.5*8*3 = 12

The parallelogram has base 5 and height 4

area = base*height = 5*4 = 20

Combine the two areas to get the grand total

12+20 = 32

Notes:

  • We won't use the slanted side 5 as part of any calculations. It was probably put in there as a distraction.
  • The base and height are always perpendicular. This applies to triangles, parallelograms, and any other shape you can think of.
  • The units "square millimeters" can be abbreviated to "sq mm" or "square mm" or mm^2 or
    mm^2. The slight confusing thing about the last two notations is that
    mm^2 basically can be (informally) thought of as
    (mm)^2 = (mm)(mm) = (1 mm)*(1mm), but don't worry about this technicality.
  • Rotate the figure if it helps to make the base horizontal and height vertical.
