The relation is not a function

The domain is (-2, 1] and the range is (-4, 6)

How to determine if the relation is a function

From the question, we have the following parameters that can be used in our computation:

The relation represented by the graph

From the graph, we can see that

For all values of x greater than 0 but less than or equal to 1, there are more than one y values for each

This means that the relation fails the vertical line test

By definition:

Relations that fail the vertical line test are not functions

So, the relation is not a function

Also, we have the following (by definition)

  • Domain is the set of all x values
  • Range is the set of all y values

From the graph, we have

x values = -2 (exclusive) to 1

y values = -4 to 6, both exclusive

This means that the domain is (-2, 1] and the range is (-4, 6)
