Fred was given $10 for getting good grades. He wants to spend his money on new pencils(x) and erasers(y). Pencils cost $1.75 each and erasers cost $.75. The equation to model this situation is 1.75x .75y = 10. If Fred buys exactly 3 pencils, how many erasers can he buy if he spends all his money?

So if you multiply 1.75 x 3 you get 5.25. Then you should subtract that from the $10. After that I saw he had 4.75 left to spend and .75 x 6 is 4.50 and that is the most he could spend so the answer is he could buy 6 erasers.
