A drama club is planning a bus trip to New York City to see a Broadway play. The cost per person for the bus rental varies inversely as the number of people going on the trip. It will cost $25 per person if 72 people go on the trip. How much will it cost per person if 34 people go on the trip? Round your answer to the nearest cent

Explanation:

direct variation would be

y = kx

inverse variation means

y = k/x

now, in our case and given example

25 = k/72

k = 25×72 = 1800

we need to use the same k for the other situation, as they are both Reisterstown the same relationship between x and y :

y = 1800/34 = $52.94117647... ≈ $52.94

it will cost about $52.94 per person, if only 34 people are going.

the meaning of all this is that the trip for the bus costs $1800. the more people ride on the bus, then the more the total of $1800 can be split as equal share per person.

if only 1 person is on the bus, he/she would have to pay the full $1800 all by him-/herself.

if there could be 1800 people on the bus, then each one would pay only $1.
