The Navy seals are considering the purchase of 200 short-range, four passenger assault vehicles that could be used to infiltrate areas occupied by enemy troops. You are a design engineer working for a defense contractor snd have been asked to design the assault vehicle. Your company has already designed specialized vehicles for the military use and you will meet with the Navy Officials to learn more about the application for this new assault vehicle. If you persuade the Navy to chose your design, your company will receive and order for all 200 vehicles. The name you have given your vehicle is Stealth assualt vehicle energy ranger, or SAVER. Your SAVER must include the following list of features: Quiet, almost silent operation, Rapid acceleration, a minimum range of 50 miles, Must be non- polluting and give off no emissions, use an environmentally friendly energy source. There is no agreement within the Navy purchasing group regarding the power source that should be used for the SAVER. You will need to describe the power sources available for the SAVER, explain which one you feel best meets the Navys goals and offer reasons. Explain the advantages and limitations of your recommended energy source and your reason(s) that support your decision.

Final answer:

An electric powertrain with battery storage is recommended for the SAVER due to its quiet operation and zero emissions.

Step-by-step explanation:

The correct answer is option renewable energy for the power source of the SAVER vehicle. To meet the Navy's requirements for a silent, rapid acceleration, non-polluting and environmentally friendly assault vehicle with a minimum range of 50 miles, an electric powertrain with battery storage is the most viable solution.

This system provides the necessary performance characteristics while not emitting any pollutants.

An electric powertrain's advantages include quiet operation, zero tailpipe emissions, and fast acceleration due to the instant torque provided by electric motors.

The limitations include the need for recharging infrastructure and the current battery technologies' limitations, primarily regarding energy density and charging speed. However, advancements in battery technology are continuously improving these aspects.

The use of a solar array to charge batteries is an interesting concept but may not be suitable for mission-critical military operations due to its reliance on sunlight. On the other hand, incorporating solar panels to assist in maintaining battery charge could be a possibility for the SAVER, albeit not as the sole power source.

Limitations like recharging infrastructure and battery technology are present but improvements are expanding its feasibility. Solar arrays could supplement battery charging but are not suitable as the primary source for military operations.
