So all we have to do is simplify the equation to isolate x.


2x^2-8=0 (original problem)


2x^2=8 (add 8 to both sides)


x^2=4 (divide both sides by 2)


x=2, x=-2 (find the square root of both sides)

Note that x = ±2 and note just 2 because both
2^2 and
(-2)^2
=4.
