A network of alliances formed in Europe between 1870 and 1914, essentially forming two factions bound by duties of hegemony or military action – the Triple Entente and the Triple Alliance. The Triple Alliance of 1882 took Germany, Austria-Hungary and Italy together. The Triple Entente of 1907 took France, Britain and Russia together. The historic point of contention between Austria was Hungary and Russia over their incompatible interests in the Balkans, and France had a strong conviction that Germany was rooted in their failure in the war of 1870
