A copy machine is available 24 hours a day. On a typical day, the machine

produces 92 jobs. Each job takes about 4 minutes on the machine, 2 minutes of which is
processing time and 2 minute is setup time (logging in, defining the job). About 20 Percent
of the jobs need to be reworked, in which case the setup time and the processing time
have to be repeated. The remainder of the time, the equipment is idle. What is the OEE
of the equipment?

Final Answer:

The Overall Equipment Effectiveness (OEE) of the copy machine is 73.6%, reflecting its efficiency. This calculation considers Availability (25.6%), Performance (50%), and Quality (80%) factors in the production process. The OEE is the product of these three components.

Step-by-step explanation:

The Overall Equipment Effectiveness (OEE) is a key performance indicator that measures the efficiency of a manufacturing process. It is calculated by multiplying three factors: Availability, Performance, and Quality.

1. Availability (A): This represents the machine's uptime. In this case, the machine is available 24 hours a day, producing 92 jobs. The total available time is given by 24 hours 60 minutes = 1440 minutes. The actual production time is the total number of jobs multiplied by the processing time per job, which is 92 jobs * 4 minutes/job = 368 minutes. Therefore, Availability (A) is calculated as

A = (Actual Production Time / Total Available Time) * 100 = (368 / 1440) * 100 = 25.6%.

2. Performance (P): This factor considers the speed at which the machine operates compared to its maximum capability. The setup time and processing time for a job are both 4 minutes, but only 2 minutes of processing time contribute to production. Therefore, Performance (P) is
P = (Ideal Cycle Time / Actual Cycle Time) * 100 = (2 / 4) * 100 = 50%.

3. Quality (Q): Quality accounts for the rework factor. Since 20% of the jobs require rework, the Quality (Q) is
Q = (Good Units / Total Units) * 100 = (80 / 100) * 100 = 80%.

Now, the OEE is calculated by multiplying these three factors:
OEE = A * P * Q = 25.6% * 50% * 80% = 73.6%. Therefore, the Overall Equipment Effectiveness of the copy machine is 73.6%.
