What is the reconstruction era?
The Reconstruction era was a complex and pivotal period in American history that lasted roughly from 1865 to 1877. It followed the Civil War and tackled the immense task of reintegrating the Southern states, which had seceded, back into the Union.
The most fundamental question was how to guarantee freedom and equal rights for the millions of people newly freed from slavery. This led to the passage of several landmark amendments to the Constitution, including the 13th, 14th, and 15th.
