Capitalism means a free market and that people can own private companies, allowing for a lot of competition.

A capitalist system (such as the US) can still have government-owned things but you can still have brands like, let's say, Nestle, that can privately own farms and factories and stocks, etc. Think of it as public school vs private school.

And that's why socialism/communism is such a controversial topic. Sure it looks beautiful on paper, but many problems can occur when there are no private ownerships and the government controls most things.
