As the backbone of the healthcare system, PSWs are vital to the quality of care client’s in all healthcare settings receive. As professionals, PSWs must work within a defined scope of practice to provide this care.

Using the scope of practice of a PSW, discussed in the Sorentino’s textbook for the Support Worker, and the principles of person- centred care discussed in class write a reflection on how a PSW would provide quality person-centred care to you if you were a client. Consider all dimensions of health in your life including, physical, social, emotional, spiritual and cognitive. Be specific about your likes, dislikes, and care needs. Ask yourself, "what does someone need to know about me to give me good care?"

Final answer:

A PSW provides quality person-centred care by understanding the client's holistic needs across physical, emotional, social, spiritual, and cognitive dimensions. They respect preferences and integrate emotional support networks and mutual interests into the caregiving framework to support overall well-being.

Step-by-step explanation:

A Personal Support Worker (PSW) provides holistic, quality, person-centred care that includes the understanding and support of not only physical health needs but also psychosocial needs. To offer exceptional care to a client like myself, a PSW should know my likes, dislikes, and care preferences across all dimensions of health. They need to consider my emotional support network, respect my social interactions, ensure my cognitive stimulation, honor my spiritual beliefs, and accommodate any physical assistance I require. Providing care within this scope means creating a caregiving framework that allows adequate exchange of information about mutual interests and concerns, which ultimately supports my overall well-being and quality of life.

For example, knowing that I value an active and engaged lifestyle, the PSW would help to facilitate my participation in community events or hobbies. If I dislike a certain food due to dietary restrictions or cultural preferences, the PSW would ensure those are respected in meal planning. They would also understand the importance of offering comfort and understanding, engaging with me on matters that concern my life's journey, and assisting me in maintaining my autonomy as much as possible.
