Explanation:

we have

f(x) = y = 2x² - 4x - 6

for a quadratic function

f(x) = ax² + bx + c

the x-coordinate of the vertex is

x = -b/(2a)

the y-coordinate is then

y = f(x)

so, in our case

a = 2

b = -4

c = -6

x = - -4/(2×2) = 4/4 = 1

y = f(1) = 2×1² - 4×1 - 6 = 2 - 4 - 6 = -8

the vertex is (1, -8).
