It was a cool day, gray and rainy, and there wasn’t much to do outdoors. So it wasn’t a surprise that Bobby stayed late after school ended. He often did on days like this. He loved the peace and solitude of the school after all the students left for the day. He let himself into the music room in the basement, nodded to Ms. Rose, the music teacher, sat down with his bass, turned the amplifier on, and started to play.
Ms. Rose finished gathering her things and headed toward the door, but she stopped to listen to Bobby for a minute. A smile spread over her face. “You’re sounding better and better,” she told him. He looked up as if he had forgotten she was still there. Then he gave her a sweet, shy smile before turning his attention back to his bass.
Ms. Rose sighed and just as she opened the door, collided with Matt, a jumpy kid with a nervous giggle that came out as he apologized to his teacher. “Are you here to practice, Matt” She asked patiently.
“Uh, yeah, Mr. Rose,” he said with a little laugh, “I sure am.”
“Bobby?” When she had the bass player’s attention, Ms. Rose made the introduction.
“Do you know Matt?” she asked.
