The mobile phase is the phase that moves through the chromatography system, carrying the dissolved sample molecules. In Figure 1, the pencil line representing the solvent acts as the mobile phase.

The stationary phase is the fixed phase that the mobile phase passes through. In Figure 1, the beaker containing the chromatography paper acts as the stationary phase and the paper provides a surface for the sample molecules to interact with and separate based on their different affinities for the paper and the solvent.
