  • (r-1)(8r + 2)

Explanation :

using the double split method,

  • 16r^2 -4r^2 -2

split the middle term in two terms such that the their product is 16*-2 = -32 and their difference is -4

  • 16r^2 -8r + 4r -2

group the like terms

  • 8r(r - 1) + 2(r-1)

factor out the common binomial (r-1)

  • (r-1)(8r + 2)

thus, the factorise form of 16r^2 -4r^2 -2 is (r-1)(8r + 2)
